The Benefits of Surround Sound

Posted by thegeek | Posted in Tech | Posted on 12-11-2009

In case you are wondering why so many people make the investment in surround sound equipment, systems, and speakers there are many reasons for many different people. When it comes to surround sound, just as with many other things in life there is no one size fits all answer though for the most part the answer wouldn’t be because Mr. Jones has one (well maybe for some it would but for the most part it has more to do with wanting the system for a specific reason). There are a few common reasons that people decide to invest in surround sound and home theater systems and we will explore a few of them over the course of the next few paragraphs. Perhaps you will find the inspiration to get a surround sound system of your very own.

I will start with my very own personal reasons. First, when I was growing up my father was the manager of our local cinema. I spent many nights sleeping in the office and watching movies from the projector room and those are some of the fondest memories of my childhood. I will never forget watching The Return of the Jedi the night before it was released in the projector room with my father and a few members of the theater staff but there was nothing compared to watching the movies inside the auditorium. What was different? The sound. There is not enough that can be said about the quality of sound inside a theater and in days long past it simply couldn’t be imitated at home. However technology has been evolving over the course of the last ten years that is allowing us to bring the same quality of sound into our homes for a reasonable price. That is reason enough for me-to relive fond childhood memories.

Another excellent reason for bringing a surround sound system into your home is not so much for watching movies or enjoying the big screen as for the enjoyment of video games. Whether you are playing in the World of Warcraft or one of the many other wonderful worlds that have been created for online gaming enjoyment you will find that surround sound is a beneficial tool in keeping your character alive and intact. These games provide important clues that place you in the center of action with knowledge of what is going on around you if you take advantage of the audible clues, hints, and tips that are provided through ambient surround sounds.

If the reasons above aren’t enough to convince you to take a trip over to the bright side of the entertainment room, then perhaps the enhancements that surround sound provides to music will do the trick. Imagine hearing your favorite music with a fuller and richer sound, with the nuances completely defined and obvious to the ear. There is so much that can be said about the difference that surround sound makes (more with some types of music than others) and yet not enough that can be said about it. If you enjoy live recordings, imagine the ability to become a part of the crowd as the ambient sounds of being there fill your room. It’s truly an amazing effect for music.

As you can see there are many reasons to bring the wonders of surround sound into your home. I hope this article has shed some light on ways that it could improve your multimedia enjoyment and possibly given you some ideas for expanding your current use of your surround sound system.

What Does an AV Receiver Do?

Posted by thegeek | Posted in Tech | Posted on 12-11-2009

The surround sound receiver is an important piece of equipment that is more commonly referred to as the AV receiver. AV in this particular instance refers to audio and video. In other words, the receiver receives all this information and then plays traffic cop directing it where it should go. If you purchase an all in one sort of AV receiver you will notice that in addition to conducting traffic this particular tool wears many hats when it comes to effectively running your home theater or surround sound system.

The receiver functions in the capacity of a switch for all audio and visual information that comes into your home theater system. This device takes all the source information and data and literally switches (or translates if you will) that data into pictures and sound.  Without something to operate in this capacity it would be impossible to have a home theater system as the information couldn’t be properly filtered and translated into the areas in which it needs to go.

Surround decoding is yet another task that the AV receiver performs with grace. Surround sound is encoded onto the discs that we play in our theater or sound equipment. The most common type of encoding is designed for 5.1 channel surround sound systems such as Dolby Digital or DTS receivers. There are others that exist but the vast majority of DVDs are designed and encoded for the above mentioned 5.1 channel systems.

As if these weren’t enough the AV receiver also works in the capacity of a signal processor. Common signals that are processed by the receiver are the following: THX post-processing, bass management, digital audio decoding, and simulated soundfields. If at all possible and budget friendly to do so you should really take the effort to find an AV receiver that is THX certified. The requirements to meet the minimal certification standards make a system that meets those standards an excellent investment for your home theater or surround sound needs.

Amplification is yet another of the many tasks performed regularly by your AV receiver. This is an important task to your surround sound and the overall ‘theatrical’ experience of viewing movies on your home theater. You will probably be wise to check with your retailer about how much amplification you actually need in your home theater, as there are many mitigating factors that affect that number. Among some of the mitigating factors are: ceiling height, square footage of the room, flooring material and other things as well). While more power is good in most situations there are times when it is simply too much for your system to handle. This is one reason that many people opt to buy ready-made box kits for their surround sound and home theater needs.

Last but certainly not least, the AV receiver actually works as a tuner for AM/FM radio. Don’t be too shocked and awed by all the jobs that this one little device does, just remember this when you see the sticker price and think to yourself how much more you would pay if you were buying a separate device for each of these functions. We should all be grateful to the person who invented this particular contraption and be glad to pay the price we are paying for the amazing sound that is produced.

Satellite Radio for the Uninitiated

Posted by thegeek | Posted in Tech | Posted on 12-11-2009

Satellite radio is often considered one of the biggest improvements in broadcasting since the introduction of the FM band. Satellite radio is also called subscription radio or pay-radio because it is only available trough subscription to one of the satellite radio providing companies. Satellite radio follows a concept similar to cable television by providing a very wide range of programs which are not available in the traditional FM or AM format for a fee.

Satellite radio uses satellites to deliver radio programs to subscribers. The radio signal is broadcasted from Earth based stations to communicational satellites, which then redirect the signal to satellite radio receivers. The radio signal is broadcasted by communication satellites to a much larger area than traditional terrestrial radio antennas. For example, satellite radio is available al across the continental area of the United States. Satellite radio is available now in most parts of the world trough services provided by companies like WorldSpace (in Europe, Asia and Africa), Sirius and XM Radio (in North America). The radio signal you receive using satellite radio is digital, which means that it is always clear and static-free, which is one of the great advantages of satellite radio. Another great thing about satellite radio is that it is almost completely commercial-free.

To begin listening to satellite radio you will need the actual satellite radio (also known as tuner or receiver), a satellite radio antenna (which is often incorporated in the satellite radio) and a subscription to the service you choose. There are several types of satellite radio from which you can choose. One of them is the dedicated car or home radio, which play trough your car or home stereo. A second option is the plug-and-play radio, which can be used in your car, as well as in your home by paying a single subscription. Your third option is the portable radio, which has rechargeable battery, a built-in antenna and you can listen to it wherever you go using headphones. The radio signals offered by different satellite radio companies are proprietary, which means that you will need different hardware for receiving, decoding and playback, depending on your subscription. Each satellite radio receiver has its own serial number called Radio ID. When you get your subscription, you will also get an activation code for your receiver. Besides the actual radio programs, satellite radio transmits metadata that contains the name of the artist, the title of the song or program, as well as the name of the channel. This makes it easier for you to decide which channel to listen to and which program to choose.

Satellite radio services provide the subscriber with more than 100 programs that vary in content from rock and jazz to rap and classical music. But satellite radio’s utility reaches far beyond listening to your favorite music without the interruption of those annoying commercials. Satellite radio also offers exclusive sports programs, cultural and educational shows, news and talk-shows. Some of the celebrities that have moved their shows from free radio to satellite radio include Howard Stern, Opie and Anthony, Bob Edwards and Martha Stewart. Unlike terrestrial radio, satellite radio is not affected by bad weather or even calamities.

At first, many people wondered why they should pay for radio if they can get it free. However, satellite radio attracts more and more people every year due to its great advantages: no commercials, extensive reach, theme programs and exceptional quality of sound.

Computer Aided Design and Construction Software: A More Efficient Way of Doing Things

Posted by thegeek | Posted in Tech | Posted on 12-11-2009

In the past, most construction companies relied on using a drafting table to create blueprints and outline projects by hand. The process was a long one. And companies had to hire a talented person with the training to complete such tasks before they could even get started on the project. Not only was a lot of time spent on drafting the project, the blueprints had to be stored somewhere. So, a lot of space was needed for the drafting table and storage.

Computers and construction software brought about the birth of CAD, Computer Aided Design. At first, only large firms could afford the software and workstations that were required to implement such a design strategy. In many cases, the price tag was six figures.

Eventually, though, the software became affordable to even the smallest companies. Today, CAD software can be purchased for as little as $50. And with computers being so cheap, an additional $500 is all that is needed to set everything up and start using computer software to design construction projects.

CAD software, regardless of cost, makes the design stage of your project easier. The software increases productivity; it is easy to carry around; and it allows a team to enhance their construction abilities. Builders can also use this software because there are programs that are designed especially for builders. CAD software can be broken down into two main categories: high end and low end. High end software deals mainly with analytical tools, whereas low end software deals with blueprints and visuals.

High End software is used to create blueprints that depict basic structure and fatigue analysis. But it doesn’t stop there. Advanced systems can work with other systems to perform in-depth structural analysis. Additionally, the work can be completed very quickly with only a few people. The old-fashioned way took a huge team and months to complete. Moreover, the quality wasn’t as guaranteed.

Low end software is merely a reduced version of the high end software, meaning that is it the same software but it has limited ability. With this type of software, blueprints can be created. Some of the low-end versions even contain building feature libraries. These libraries help those with little training add accurate details. According to construction software reviews, the programs are user-friendly and easily learned by those with limited computer knowledge.

The graphics associated with the low end software are intense. The programs create realistic, detailed 3D images. A builder can virtually stroll through their design and invite clients to come along with them. Want to “stage” your design? The feature libraries contain everything that you need to “state your design including furniture and decorative items.

Not only is the use of Computer Aided Design software efficient, it is also required in many construction projects regardless of their size. Most cities require that plans be submitted electronically when applying for permits and such. In many cases, even homeowners are required to purchase software in order to get a remodel approved by the city authorities.

Another great feature of CAD is its mobility. Gone are the days of carrying around bulky blueprints that could become damaged at any step of the journey. Now, plans can be put directly on a jump drive and carried easily in a pocket or briefcase. You can even email your plans.

Construction software is a great way to increase the productivity and profit margin of any business regardless of how small or large.

Aion Spiritmaster Gathering guide

Posted by thegeek | Posted in Tech | Posted on 12-11-2009

Before you start crafting, you need to understand gathering. Gathering is the process of accumulating materials required for crafting. There are tons of gathering nodes sprinkled all over the landscape. Gathering in Aion has a leveling system, which means that you cannot gather some items until you’ve reached the right gathering level.

You can start gathering at level 1, and although it’s time consuming to gather everything you use, it’s best to start doing it from the beginning. There are several important reasons to improve your gathering skills, even though you decide never to take up crafting. One is that you actually earn a small amount of XP from gathering, which may not seem much compared to the amount from grinding or questing, but during your early levels they do help. Another is that at later levels you’ll encounter quests that require you to give an NPC a certain amount of say, fruit. If you don’t have the proper gathering level, you can’t get this fruit. You may be able to buy them at the Trade Broker or a Private Store but don’t always count on this, and may also sell for ridiculous prices. And finally, crafting materials sell well on the Trade Broker, so you can make a profit from selling them. However, some sell better than others, so keep an eye out on which are the money makers and which are the duds.

During the first nine levels you’re supposedly gathering the raw materials, but when you become a Daeva at level 10 you instead are now extracting vitality, which suggests that you’re instead gathering the essence of the material. Regardless, there is no difference as the fruit and ore look exactly the same in your inventory when you gathered them as a mortal and when you gather them as a Daeva. However, as a Daeva you’re also able to gather one important material — aether. Aether is required for most crafting professions and has other uses. The tricky thing with aether gathering is that not only are they available in certain areas (e.g. Altgard Fortress in Asmodae), but Aether is located in the air, usually at high altitudes. Since you only have a short amount of flight time — especially as a newly minted Daeva — it can be particularly challenging and frustrating to gather this much needed product.

Windows 7 to have an impact on Computer Sales

Posted by thegeek | Posted in Tech | Posted on 12-11-2009

The tech lovers can rejoice as Windows 7 has been launched in the international market.  According to a recent survey conducted in the United States by Dell Computer Systems global computer sales will increase as a result of this launch and create a renewed interest in the minds of the consumers. As per the opinion of the company officials, Windows 7 is an excellent product and promises a long term performance oriented service.

The corporate groups which are still using the previous version of Windows Vista will definitely want a switch to Windows 7 and upgrade their systems according to the market needs. The worldwide demand for Windows 7 will be felt gradually as many software companies are eyeing bigger profits in the coming season with acquisitions and fresh deals. With this kind of an approach, Dell has recently completed the acquisition of Perot Systems and added another successful cap in its feather.

As the previous year has witnessed recession, there has been a decline in computer sales and a whole new planning has been undertaken to get captive returns. Windows 7 will surely provide the entire market with a boost and change its overall structure. As companies like Dell have faced stiff competition from the likes of Acer in the recent times, it’s high time to catch up and derive considerable returns.

As Windows 7 has a range of special features it is more upgraded than Vista and provides the users with multiple options. As new business avenues are being explored by the companies with a rise in the level of clientele, Windows 7 can provide the much needed impetus for growth.
