The Battle Windows Hosting

Anyone who is uses computers today will be familiar with Windows and Linux as operating systems. Some prefer Windows because it is extremely easy to use  both hardware and software  and some prefer Linux because it is much more flexible is use above all it is open source ware and hence it is free. Those who enjoy Linux are totally baffled as to why people would want to pay for something that you can get absolutely free.

Actually there is a simple and logical answer to this question. When the Windows was launched some 20 plus years ago, it caught like wild fire because it was all of a sudden so easy to use and so convenient to install. The best things that it maintained a constant identity  as the product of Windows, while on the other hand Linux went along under many names, such as Knoppix, Mandrake, SuSe, Windows, and so on. With each name different companies Linux as an operating system had slight variations. Hence, it was bothersome for people to keep track, and sometime use Linux due to this aspect.

Then comes the inherent difference between these operation systems.

Technically speaking, you will find the GUI is optional in the Linux operations system while it is part and parcel of the Windows. The separation of the GUI directly affects the reliability and speed  not to mention efficiency  of a server and hence here Linux scores over the Windows.

Another major difference is in the way these operating systems handle their command prompts. While Windows uses similar command interpreters for its Windows 9x versions, the NT series have a different style but common to each other. Linux on the other hand, being a UNIX version has the capability of handling multiple command interpreters, which can be a boon, though it mostly favors Bourne Again Shell BASH. The other interpreters that you will find in Linux are C Shell, ash, Korn shell and so on.

The best and most highlighted difference is the price tag attached to the operating systems. Windows is an expensive to say the least, operating system which comes with a copyrighted license, while Linux is free for all, easily downloadable anytime you want it. The downside here is that Linux has instruction which will tell you what to do  which may be why people are indeed reluctant to move away from Windows though there are a few low cost Linux versions which come with automation and manuals.

Another plus in favor of Linux is the lack of any security requirement. The viruses, spy wares, malawares and what not you have it are all a product of Microsoft, for Windows. Hence, while you have to use high security firewalls with Windows, you are free from any such headaches with Linux.

Lastly, you have the difference of availability of software. The majority of the software that you find on the market are for Windows and they will not run on Linux unless Windows is somewhere configured as a subsystem which actually goes against the reason of using Linux in the first place.

Hence, till a suitable interface is found where Linux can be compatible with Windows without using Windows itself, have a few clear cut instructions for first time users and sufficient information on its technicalities, people will prefer Windows to Linux, even if they have to pay to use it.

Blogs(A.K.A. – Weblogs) are the BIGGEST thing going right now online because of there many uses for both the Web Surfer and the Internet Marketer.
But, you probably already know that so for the purpose of this article I’m not going to talk about ‘Blogs’ in general because I’m sure you’ve read enough about them by now and/or you already have a few kicking around the net.What I’m going to share with you Right Now is something I discovered while surfing the net researching Tag and Ping tactics and Social Bookmarkleting because I run more then a few blogs online and wanted to find out how I could take advantage of this whole Tag and Ping and Social Bookmarkleting thing with as little effort as possible.

If your new to this whole Tag and Ping game then let me give you a quick summary of what a Tag is and what a Ping is so there’s no confusion as you continue through this article.

*Tags* – Tags are simply *category names* and are selected by you using keywords around whatever niche your blogging about and are included within each post you make, that is, if your blog is set up for Tags.

*Ping* – By Pinging your letting the weblog trackers(like Technorati for example) and the search engines now that your blog has been updated with fresh content and is ready for their spiders to come and crawl your blog for indexing into their databases.

This is where the – Tags – come into play for your blogs posts because as soon as the social bookmarkleting service spiders your blog, it will list your post under that given Tag you chose. So it’s very important you choose your Tags wisely.

Guaranteed Bandwidth – Finding it and Finding it at the Best Price

Starting an online business has several recurring expenses and some analogies to brick and mortar businesses. One of the places where they differ is getting bandwidth. While not an exact analogy, bandwidth is broadly related to the road frontage needed to see your business’ shop front, where the analogy breaks down is that you have to pay for a particular volume of traffic of people to see your signage and find out about your products, something that isn’t necessary on a motorway with a physical sign.

(The benefit of bandwidth-based businesses is that your motorway and shop front are visible all around the world if someone knows to find them.)

However, most commercial business hosting providers have fixed width bandwidth packages. For many businesses, these are sufficient, but for others, they are not. Running out of bandwidth means that people cannot access your site. There are ways around running out of bandwidth, most notably reducing the size of graphics on your web site, and optimizing it for fast downloads in general, but these will put a significant crimp on how your web site looks, and that’s what attracts customers.

The next option for bandwidth is usually overkill for a commerce site, but is the bread and butter of a high-end data centre: Leasing a fixed bandwidth connection.

Leased line connections are, to a business, the equivalent of a cable modem or DSL line for your home. It’s a dedicated connection between your business and the Internet; they start out broadly identical to a DSL line for a higher end service, like a 1.5 Megabits per Second download speed and roughly 2/3 of that for upload speeds. They quickly go beyond that, however. Some are aggregated links of multiple cable modem connections, and at the high end, you can get a dedicated T1 line, or an OC-3 line at 34 megabits per second (or multiple OC-3 lines for a major data centre).

For most businesses that use the web predominantly for ecommerce and customer relations, an OC-3 line is overkill by a large margin. The primary exceptions are commerce web sites that deal in high bandwidth items, such as videos. Video rental on demand consumes tremendous amounts of bandwidth, as does search engine processing or running a shared file or FTP server.

Most businesses that use a leased line for high-end bandwidth use it, as mentioned, for data centre connectivity, with the aim to provide faster connections than they could get through the public internet. These connections are used to share data and run virtualized applications, and can give employees in locations as disparate as Leeds and Glasgow speeds comparable to a local Ethernet connection.

International packages can also be assembled and even high end residential services can be run, with optical fibre being run to newer developments.

One place where consideration is merited is the company’s reputation; many companies simply resell leased lines from the major telephone companies, and provide minimal support if there are problems; it is always worth it to check out the company’s reputation by a judicious Google search before signing up for a contract.
